"Do It Yourself" Quick Tips to help prevent fires and floods

- Clean your dryer duct at least once a year to prevent lint buildup that can cause a fire. Clean off the lint screen after every use.
- Inspect the trees around your home for damage. A heavy branch can cause severe damage to your home. Prune trees and examine the trees for cracks, exposed roots, or brown leaves, which may be symptoms of illness or instability.
- Check the caulk in your bathroom and re-caulk every few years to prevent water damage. It's important to replace it in order to prevent mildew, mold, and water damage.
- Clean out your gutters twice a year to prevent water damage and pest infestations. You may need to clean the gutters more often, but doing it during spring and fall is a good rule.
- Check to make sure smoke alarms are working and fire extinguishers are charged so you're always prepared. Once a year, you should replace the batteries, vacuum around the vents, and spray the outside of the smoke alarm with insect repellent.
- Scrub down your kitchen range hood to keep your air clear and prevent a grease fire. Start by wiping down the outside of the hood with soapy water whenever you clean the rest of your surfaces, then clean the filter every 2 months. To do so, just soak it in hot, soapy water, then rinse it off and let it air-dry before re-installing it.
